Artificial intelligence already can replace 11.7% of the US labor market, according to a new study reported by CNBC. To help the nation cope with AI’s impact on the workforce, Amanda Ballantyne, Liz Shuler, and Jodi Forlizzi argue in Issues that workers themselves must be included in conversations about directions for research and development as well as policy responses. “History shows that involving workers can positively shape how technological change unfolds in an industry,” they write, adding that “tested methods are available for including workers’ perspectives during AI development and implementation.”
