Baby corals conceived in a laboratory using assisted reproduction hold promise for restoring lost natural coral reefs in the coastal waters of the Dominican Republic, the AP reports. Coral reefs also are increasingly threatened in waters under US jurisdiction, from Florida and Puerto Rico to Hawaii and American Somoa, Tundi Agardy writes in Issues. In a deep look at the threats to coral reefs and ways to protect them, she calls for “full engagement” of government and the scientific and conservation communities, adding that “the costs of managing reefs are far outweighed by the net benefits provided by reefs.”
