Obesity Drugs Poised for Major Impact

June 17, 2026

In the laboratory and the business world, obesity drugs are increasingly hot, CNBC reports, with a “wave of new entrants hoping to get into the massive market in the coming years.” In Issues, Laura A. Schmidt and Luc L. Hagenaars maintain that these new drugs “are poised to disrupt medicine, human behavior, economies, and more.” They may help reverse the “ill-founded assumption” that obesity is a personal failing, the authors write, and shift blame toward “the ultra-processed, hyper-palatable commercial food products that dominate the American diet.” In turn, this may spur government policies and food industry practices aimed at curbing obesity.
