US No Longer in Innovation’s Top 10

The United States dropped out of the Bloomberg Innovation Index’s top 10 countries this year. The index assesses such things as R&D spending, manufacturing capability, and concentration of high-tech companies. South Korea ranked first, while the US fell to 11th from 9th. Perhaps this shouldn’t be surprising. In an Issues online exclusive, a trio of experienced analysts argue that the nation’s innovation policies are out of date, and they offer a blueprint for crafting a new policy framework that would enhance US R&D, in part by learning from the rest of the world.
