Big Firms Buying Into Low-Carbon Concrete

US companies with major real estate holdings are forming an alliance to use their collective purchasing power to advance low-carbon production of concrete and cement for their buildings, CNBC reports. Producing these materials now accounts for 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, so this action could help mitigate the climate impact of what Colin Cunliff identifies in Issues as one of the hardest sectors of the economy to decarbonize. But more will be needed to “tackle the hard stuff,” and he proposes a broad research and policy agenda to “put the United States and the world on a path to net-zero carbon emissions.”
