Changing Directions on Alzheimer’s Disease

Given repeated failures in the search for drugs to prevent or treat Alzheimer’s disease, some researchers are beginning to look in new directions, recognizing that the disease doesn’t follow a single route of progression but instead there may be many different contributors and pathways involved. A good idea that reflects suggestions offered recently in Issues, when a philanthropy official proposed that research should shift from its current focus on molecular, genetic, and cellular events and instead “look at the complexity of the aging brain in its biosocial context.”
