Submissions

Issues in Science and Technology publishes articles that analyze and provide original perspectives on policy issues related to science, technology, and society. These articles contribute crucial context and recommend actions by government, industry, academia, and individuals to solve pressing problems. The pages of Issues are open to anyone who can write an informed, well-reasoned, and policy-relevant article. We welcome a variety of authorial styles and voices, so long as articles are analytically rigorous and accessible to non-specialist readers.

If you would like to write a piece for Issues, please send a pitch to editors@issues.org. We strongly prefer to receive pitches, rather than completed manuscripts, so that the editors can work with you to develop and focus your article. Pitches are brief proposals (no longer than a page) addressing the following questions:

  • What is your main argument, or the question you are addressing?
  • What evidence, analysis, or stories will you provide?
  • What are your main recommendations? To whom are you making them?
  • Why is the piece timely now?
  • Why is this piece right for Issues?

Editors will respond to your pitch so that you will have feedback before preparing a draft manuscript. This will ensure your piece is framed appropriately for Issues and follows our format (in terms of citations, style, length, etc.). Submitting a pitch rather than a full manuscript will save you time and effort.

We aim to respond to all pitches within 1โ€“2 weeks. If you have not heard back from us within two weeks, please feel free to nudge us.

Manuscripts are carefully edited by Issues editors, who will work closely with authors to assure that arguments are clear, factual, and effective. Before drafting a manuscript, we encourage all prospective authors to peruse a sampling of past articles from Issues to get a sense of analytical approaches and writing styles that are appropriate, as well as our publication format.

Issues does not accept unsolicited book reviews.

Forum Letters

Issues is committed to fostering open, analytically rigorous debate on key science and technology policy dilemmas of the day. To that end, we publish a lively Forum section in which experts respond to published essays, some of which we feature in the print edition. To submit a Forum letter of approximately 500 words on any topic covered in Issues, email forum@issues.org.
