    Jails Good Places to Help Opioid Addicts

     

    6/27/17 โ€“ With many states facing an epidemic of opiate addiction accompanied by more people locked up for drug offenses, jails provide a natural place to provide treatmentโ€”maybe even โ€œthe best place to initiate addict recoveryโ€โ€”says an opinion article in the New York Times. In Issues, two medical and judicial experts have also cited the importance of treating incarcerated drug addicts, as part of a larger recommended effort to improve overall health care within correctional systems.

    Finns Show the Way on Nuclear Waste Storage

     

    6/26/17 โ€“ Plans for building the nuclear waste storage facility at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, fell apart a decade ago because, in part, federal officials didnโ€™t do enough to win support from state and local residents, analysts have said in Issues. Heeding this lesson, Finland is now well along in building what will be the worldโ€™s first long-term nuclear waste repository, with one official recounting that community involvement was key and that โ€œvery soon we learned that we had to be very open.โ€
