Self-Driving Trucks Slated to Expand Operations

May 13, 2026

A major US distribution company plans to expand its use of self-driving long-haul trucks, from a pilot program in Texas with a human in the cab as a precaution to “unsupervised” operations across the nation’s Sun Belt by the end of the year, CNBC reports. In Issues, Steve Viscelli urges asking more questions about this technology—indeed, any technology—before moving too far or fast. “What policies will maximize the benefits of self-driving trucks to workers, communities, and the environment while mitigating costs for them?” he writes. “It is time for the public, and truckers themselves, to become more involved in these deliberations.”
