Limiting AI Weapons, With Care

A New York Times opinion article on the expanding role of artificial intelligence in war-fighting was headlined “Are You Ready for Weapons That Call Their Own Shots?” In Issues, two longtime observers of science and society—and AI experts—already answered that question: no. But they added that regulating AI-controlled weapons, as well as other AI applications, should be done as part of a broader public discussion of “the policy measures and cultural changes that will be needed to negotiate the coming transformation into an AI-rich world.”
