Restrictions on Cannabis Loosened, but Challenges Remain

April 30, 2026

The US government has loosened restrictions on medical marijuana in states where it is already allowed, a shift that a PBS report calls “jump-starting the process for reclassifying marijuana more broadly.” But as MJ Cross and coauthors describe in a letter for Issues, numerous challenges remain in advancing public health and environmental safety within the evolving cannabis industry. Critical issues they cite include the continued presence of unregulated cannabis markets; insufficient quality control in laboratory testing; the emergence of new “designer” cannabis products; and pollution, water diversion, and habitat disruption from illegal grow operations.
