Battery Storage Technology Moving Ahead

June 10, 2026

Auto giant General Motors is partnering with a start-up company to advance a new generation of sodium-ion batteries that could help “reshape grid-scale energy storage,” CNBC reports. The help would be welcome. In Issues, Sarah Kurtz and coauthors call for thinking creatively about various types of long-duration energy storage technologies to get “higher shares of pollution-free solar and wind to power electricity grids across the world.” Following this broad vision, they write, and particularly staying open to not-yet-commercialized storage technologies, could “give us the best chance of quickly reaching low-cost, net-zero carbon energy.”
